spotlight_of_shame400.pngThe "Spotlight of Shame" is a feature that highlights the worst in light pollution and light trespass.  We showcase local commercial properties and businesses that exhibit offensive and egregious examples of poorly planned and implemented outdoor lighting.

OneDarkSky chooses the recipient of this notorious "honor" and displays photos of the offending lights along with basic information on the business/commercial entity, the lighting in question, and its apparent effects on the surrounding community.

All photographs in the "Spotlight" use the same exposure settings to maintain a consistent reference for comparison.  Photos are taken with a Canon 40D DSLR using a Canon 50mm lens at f/2.8, 1/8 sec, and ISO 800.  We find this combination provides the most accurate representation of how these lighting fixtures appear to the naked eye at night.

The "Spotlight" is restricted to commercial properties and businesses.  We will not include private, residential examples.  Also, we will not disclose any personal information related to the recipients of the "Spotlight of Shame" other than information which is made readily available to the public by the recipients themselves.

If you know of a business or commercial property with really bad outdoor lighting, feel free to nominate them for the "Spotlight of Shame" by emailing us at SkyTalk@OneDarkSky.com.  Include the name of the business, its location, a brief description of the lighting in question, and a photo if possible.  If OneDarkSky agrees with your nomination, we may include it in the spotlight!
